Getting Started
Sometimes beginning a yoga practice can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve never been inside a yoga studio. Don’t be intimidated! Below we have some information you will find helpful in taking the next step to enjoying the pleasures and benefits of yoga. And, If you can’t reach your toes, don’t worry, after just a few sessions you’ll begin to notice how your body will open up in ways that you never imagined.

First, let’s start with a common question: What is Hatha yoga?
Hatha yoga is an ancient science of well-being used to restore inner harmony and facilitate balance and integration on all levels. The practice combines the use of physical postures (asana), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation and relaxation to develop peace of mind, balance, strength and flexibility. Working most specifically with the physical body, Hatha yoga relaxes and tones muscles, massages the organs, regulates the body’s energy level, clams and centers the mind and reduces stress.

Class style - Whether you are interested in a more traditional Hatha class where the focus is on each individual posture or a more challenging and energetic flowing style in which postures are fluidly linked together in a continuous and somewhat challenging sequence, Park City Yoga Studio has a variety of yoga to choose from and can help you find the style of class that best suits your needs. We also offer Gentle yoga classes at a slower pace adapted to the needs of seniors, those with injuries or limitations, or for general stress reduction. Periodically we offer Restorative, Pre-natal and Back Care yoga. Please see Class Descriptions for more info or call the studio @ 435-649-6456 to speak to one of our qualified instructors.

Class level - The levels of classes correspond to the mastery the student possesses of the yoga postures or asanas. Most of our classes have a blended level such as 1&2 or 3&4. The instructor will always give you options on how to make your practice modified or more challenging depending on what your needs are. Check our Class Levels or talk to one of our qualified yoga instructors by calling the studio @ 435-649-6456 if you aren’t sure and have questions.

Our Instructors – There are so many wonderful instructors at Park City Yoga Center that you might have a difficult time choosing which one to take classes from. That would be a great problem to have. We suggest you try all of the instructors and don’t be afraid to talk to the instructor before or after class if you have questions on their style and always feel free to sit in on a class.

Physical or Medical Issues - Please make sure you communicate any pre-existing medical problems to your teacher before class. If you are recovering from a recent injury, have a chronic muscular-skeletal issue, have severe physical limitations or are recovering from a surgical or medical procedure, you might want to consider scheduling a private session with one of our qualified instructors before joining a class.

Should I opt for private instructions?
Yes, one should go for private sessions. Your private yoga instructor will work with you on the specific poses or elements that you'd like to focus on. The teacher can explain to you how to deepen certain poses, which techniques to use for meditation and how to breathe properly. In private sessions, you also receive adjustments for the duration of the class, which helps you to go deeper into the pose.
.
Class Etiquette
Dress should be comfortable. Wear loose-fitting or non-restrictive clothing and avoid accessories that could impede your movement. Classes are all barefoot. Please take your shoes off in the foyer and neatly place them under the bench.

Perfume is a no. Please…help us maintain a fragrance-free environment.

Arrive early enough to set up your mat and get centered.

An empty stomach will ensure you are more comfortable in class.

Wait two to three hours after a meal or a half hour after a light snack or drink. Avoid sipping water during class, but drink plenty afterwards.

Yoga mats can be borrowed if you are a new student or have forgotten yours. We suggest purchasing a mat from our boutique as it signifies a commitment to your practice.

Check in at the boutique, fill out the student registration and turn off your cell phone.
